Dearest people in the fight against HIV: Huge News.
The CAPRISA Project, at the 2010 International AIDS Conference in Vienna, has come out as the first ever successful "proof of concept" that a microbicide gel (in topical, vaginal application) can effectively prevent HIV transmission in women. YES.
And guess who was a major part of the CAPRISA Team alongside South African Doctors (Husband and Wife Team Drs. Abdool-Karim) and Participants?
UNC Center for AIDS Research principal partner FHI (Family Health International: http://fhi.org/)
and
The UNC Center for AIDS Research's own Dr. Angela Kashuba, of the CPAC Core (Clinical Pharmacology and Analytical Chemistry: http://cfar-cpacc.unc.edu/ is their brand new website!)
This is a FIRST in the fight against AIDS, and comes after a long battle to put protection against HIV transmission into women's hands. Most women had 39% efficacy when using the gel, with some experiencing up to 54% efficacy in preventing sexual transmission of HIV when topically applying the microbicide, which concentrates Tenofovir, an Anti-Retroviral Drug (ARV) given by Gilead Pharmaceuticals, into a gel form women can use vaginally before and after intercourse. Check out the press here below (it is epic, and rightfully so).
Also be sure to look out for our upcoming CENTER FOR AIDS RESEARCH DOCUMENTARY which will feature footage of the standing ovation given to the Caprisa Team at the International AIDS Conference 2010 in Vienna, when presenting their findings (where you'll see our own Dr. Angela Kashuba presenting beautifully on the panel, about the #s and understandings of how the drugs "work" in the body).
Encouraged and heartened by all this hard work,
from many heroic minds, efforts and visions come true in collaboration
(that is the spirit of the UNC CFAR, and of this CAPRISA project in which it so meaningfully took part),
Check out NC Equality, NC AIDS Action Network, and North Carolina Citizens in action at the NC Legislative Building in Raleigh, May 25, 2010. The UNC CFAR CODE Office visited the state legislature with the latest installment of the VOICING WISDOM PROJECT, one of our most exciting to date.
When you view and listen to this VoiceThread, you will see how North Carolinian citizens are speaking up to say what they think we need to do now to stand up to HIV and AIDS in our state.
These are comments from constituents meeting with their legislators from all over the state: from concerned citizens to leaders in public health, to ADAP advocates and recipients, to young people and human rights organizers -- with a special comment from Miss North Carolina International Beauty Queen. Everyone is involved in this fight, and North Carolinians have the first-hand knowledge and expertise necessary to direct the policy and public health priorities for our state....
Here's to hoping that we get the 602 eligible but uninsured people off of the ADAP waiting list -- the longest in the country.
Here's to hoping NC will be like so many other states across the nation, implementing cost-effective Needle Exchange Programs, which reduce the spread of HIV and Hepatitis C drastically, and connect people with health services for addiction recovery (for which there are LONG waiting lists in NC) -- often reducing drug use in the meantime.
Here's to hoping that legislators in our state do not contribute to stigma with an amendment "banning gay marriage" ....
And, here's to hoping that comprehensive sexual and reproductive health information is implemented through changed curriculums throughout our state's schools, following passage of a House of Representatives measure last session for comprehensive health education.
....What does the state of North Carolina represent to you? Please visit http://voicethread.com/share/1176219/ to share your own voice recorded comments!
Let us keep this vital conversation going!
In solidarity and hope,
Marie and The UNC CFAR CODE Office
National AIDS Strategy Public Meeting: blog.AIDS.gov
Tomorrow, Wednesday February 24, big decisions are being made at the National HIV/AIDS Strategy Public Meeting -- creating U.S. AIDS Policy for the years to come.
We hope it will be in the interest of everyone infected and affected by HIV, all those at risk, and everyone experiencing disparities in access to health care and coverage in the U.S. right now. We hope it will represent and stand for people like our friends from across North Carolina, who are working to make sure people who live with HIV are living the best and healthiest lives they can, and that all people who are at risk for HIV get all the honest information they need to stay free of the virus. We hope this meeting will produce policy and work that assists and empowers communities across the state -- rural and urban alike -- folding their citizens into integrative solutions battling the social, political, and economic factors that fuel the epidemic around us.
There's a lot on the table -- but that's good, since there's a lot on the line.
Here's to hoping that our collective hope can shift the balance further in favor of people seeking access to health services, and health coverage which reduces costs, increases health outcomes, and makes more sense for everyone in our nation -- which always fares better financially, socially, and politically, when we're all a part of making good health the norm, as a basic civil and human right.
Check out the article on tomorrow' meeting here: blog.AIDS.gov
Let's send all our best wishes -- together, in solidarity, in action, and in voicing our needs, we stand.
Check it out: seems pretty unbelievable....but what great news for us all to be able to read and believe. BREAKING NEWS in a study which looks forward to a UNIVERSAL way to prevent ALL forms of HIV transmission, for ALL people. Wow.
(Make sure to watch the VIDEO on the left hand side of the linked page)
Breakthroughs like this one - made by UNC Chapel Hill of all places :) - bring us all into the fold of hope. It takes everyone, all our smarts, and all our energy, all our belief that new paths are ahead -- and that we can CREATE them -- to stop HIV in its tracks.
Warmest greetings everybody! We're starting it off right, with a new blog, a new year, and a new and exciting project, VOICING WISDOM....welcome, welcome! Check it out:
Some funny, some profound, these PSA messages are coming to you from NC A&T and the Hayti Heritage Center on World AIDS Day 2009. A&T's "AGGIES AGAINST AIDS" and NCCU's "PROJECT REACH" Peer Educators were repping well, joining North Carolinians of all ages and backgrounds in speaking out about how we think the fight against HIV should go in our state.
It's up to us to make it clear what we stand for -- what we know is true now, and what we envision as the alternative for our future. This is about what each of us finds most important. How can we stop the fears which spread HIV -- and stand up with the belief and power it takes to live now? -- WE are where it's at, North Carolina.
Take a listen, and know that we're sending love and excitement to all our friends in the New Year,
Marie and Everyone at the CODE Office
